The strap is adjustable (Velcro) & padded. On the strap it has a small pocket that you could use for a cell phone, keys, ipod, etc. The larger zipped compartment is very spacious and the smaller one has additional compartments for organization. I am using this backpack as a carry on for the plane because its easy to take on or off and it is extremely comfortable! Rating: 5 / 5 Perfect sized backpack.
